About Sarah Beth

Sarah Beth Serran is a writer, media creator, researcher, and advocate whose work sits at the intersection of media, gender, health, education, and social impact. She is currently completing her undergraduate degree at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, studying Media Studies with a minor in Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality Studies.

At the center of Sarah Beth’s work is a belief that media can be used for far more than entertainment or promotion. It can make complicated information accessible, preserve stories that might otherwise be overlooked, connect people with resources, and turn education into something people genuinely want to engage with.

Her academic and professional interests include reproductive health, gender equity, public health communication, digital storytelling, marketing, community engagement, and advocacy. As she continues her education and career, Sarah Beth hopes to build work that combines creative media with research and advocacy, both through digital platforms and community-based projects.

Sarah Beth is also the writer and creator behind The Truth She Carries. Want to learn more about the book and the story behind it? Click here to explore.

Advocacy Through Media & Community

Sarah Beth has been an active volunteer with Planned Parenthood since 2023, participating in volunteer opportunities, educational presentations, workshops, and advocacy efforts throughout the year. Her involvement has strengthened her commitment to reproductive health education, bodily autonomy, and accessible healthcare.

Since January 2026, she has also been developing a digital exhibit exploring representations of birth control during the decade following the FDA approval of the birth control pill. Created alongside a faculty mentor and research partner, the project brings together historical materials gathered from archival collections and transforms them into an accessible digital media experience. Scheduled for completion in October 2026, the exhibit combines historical research, media production, and public health advocacy with a larger goal: making reproductive-health history available beyond traditional academic spaces.

Her advocacy also extends into career development. Through her work in marketing with UNC Greensboro’s Career & Professional Development office, Sarah Beth created Careers Without Barriers, a media and advocacy initiative focused on the obstacles students from different backgrounds can encounter while navigating education, career development, and professional spaces. Through planned interviews, digital storytelling, educational content, and collaborations with campus organizations, the project aims to make career resources more inclusive and accessible.

For Sarah Beth, these projects reflect a larger philosophy behind her work: media is not separate from advocacy; it can be one of its most powerful tools. Long before social media, radio and the microphone showed how technology could amplify a voice and carry ideas far beyond the person speaking them. Today, those tools have expanded into social platforms, video, podcasts, websites, digital campaigns, and other forms of communication that can make information more accessible and bring important issues into public conversation. Sarah Beth is especially interested in using media to support advocacy surrounding disability and accessibility, mental health, reproductive health, gender identity and representation, gender equity, and other issues affecting communities that are too often misunderstood or overlooked. While media is not the only way to create change, she believes it can help education and advocacy reach people who may otherwise never encounter it. Alongside direct community involvement and organizing, this intersection of media, accessibility, representation, and advocacy is at the core of the work she hopes to continue building.

The Experience Behind the Work

Sarah Beth’s approach to advocacy and media has also been shaped by her professional experience in marketing and communications.

From December 2024 through April 2025, she worked as a marketing intern at a medical spa, gaining hands-on experience in social media, digital marketing, copywriting, website content, community outreach, and working creatively within the professional and privacy-conscious expectations of a healthcare environment. The experience became an important foundation for learning how to balance creativity with accuracy, responsibility, and professionalism.

She later served as Director of Marketing for UNCG Women in Business, where she created marketing content and promotional materials for an organization dedicated to helping women and others who identify with its mission build confidence, professional skills, and connections as they prepare to enter the workforce.

Across these experiences, Sarah Beth has continued developing the same skill set that shapes her writing and advocacy today: taking information, stories, and ideas and finding a way to make people stop, understand, and care.
